What is SSB Interview
SSB Interviews are a stepping stone to become officers in Armed Forces. The prime aim of selection system in SSB is to conclusively explore and grade potentiality in a candidate which are required to be essential in a candidate for becoming an officer in armed forces.
In order to be fair, the system consists of three different and independent techniques. Each technique grades and assesses the qualities which are essential for defence services by allowing least time and under stressful condition, which is the practical requirement for an officer during emergencies like wars. The three-primary test of officer’s selection include:
(a) Psychological Test. These are carried out by specially trained psychologist under time bound system.
(b) GTO’s Test. These tests are carried out face to face on the ground in which the testing officer assesses the qualities based on the performance shown by candidates physically on ground and under stress.
(c) Interviewing Officer’s Test. The President or Deputy President interviews the candidate. He assesses the traits of personality of the candidate. The interviewing officer generally divides his interview in two parts, with stress and without stress.
None of the above assessors consult any one during the period of their tests. All the three assessors are independent.
Once the tests are over, on the fifth day a final conference is scheduled. All the candidates are called in the serial order of chest numbers allotted to them and asked general questions to them. They may ask for any suggestion for bringing improvement in SSB. In very exceptional cases, however, questions may be asked to confirm if there is a doubt in candidate's character or the qualities by any of the assessors.

Lets see what are these tests in more detail.
Psychological Tests
The candidates who are recommended in stage I then move for psychological test the same day or next day morning depending on centre to centre. Psychological tests in other words, are first part of personality tests. This is completely a written test. The psychologist does not see the candidates, but he gives his assessment about the qualities, character and traits of personality of the candidate through the answers given by the candidate on the answer sheets. If the psychologist finds officer like qualities in a candidate, he recommends for selection. This test comprises of the following:
(a) Words Association.
(b) Thematic Apperception (Picture Story)
(c) Situation Reaction.
(d) Self-Description.
This guide contains lot of words with appropriate sentences, pictures with model stories, situations/problems with suggested solutions and guidelines with examples for self-description for the guidance of the candidates. Once the candidates go through them carefully, they will understand about the requirement of assessors and perform better.

Group Test (GTO)
Conducted on Day 3 & 4 of the SSB Interview as part of Advance testing and are part of the outdoor tasks
Once the psychological test are over, next day the candidates are handed over to the GTO (group Testing Officer), where they remain with him for two days. The tests of GTO are on the ground, practical and face to face. The GTO assesses the traits of personality of the candidate by observing his performance closely including the practical capability and leadership qualities of the candidates, which are required for outdoor works as the officers of armed. This aspect is necessary for an officer in the defense services. The GTO’s tests are given as under:
Indoor Tasks
(a) Group Discussion
(b) Group Planning Exercise
(c) Lecturettes
Outdoor Tasks
(d) Progressive Group Task
(e) Group Obstacle Race (or Snake race)
(f) Half Group Task
(g) Individual obstacles
(h) Command Task
(i) Final Group Task
One needs to practice a lot for group discussion topics. Our SSB guide book contains model group discussions and other topics for discussing amongst the group. The topics are mostly International and National current affairs as well as social topics to include the current trends in the society, the government policies, sports, education, etc. Total time given for discussion is approximately 20 minutes. Like the indoor tasks, outdoor tasks are also equally important to test the candidate’s ability to plan and tackle unforeseen situations or the problems successfully in a team and under stress.

Personal Interview
Conducted on all days depending on schedule
Interview is held on all days after completion of Psychology or Group Test. The interviews are for a duration of 35 to 40 minutes on an average. The interview is taken either by the President or Deputy President. Both are senior, experienced and matured officers. The psychologist and the GTO have different ways to decide the qualities of the candidate. At the same time their jurisdiction of testing is limited according to their profession and expertness. But the interviewing officer has the vast jurisdiction. The interviewing officer assesses the qualities and traits of personality of the candidate through interaction by putting questions and the problems to the candidate. His ultimate aim is to find out the suitability for an officer in armed forces.
